Already working under a commission!

So I haven't even been here two weeks, and already I've been commissioned to do artwork for someone.  In this case, it happens to be City Light Hamburg!

Janos emailed me this morning and told me they're putting together a sort of mission statement for their church.  They need a blueprint graphic to go with it to show their church as a building with the basic foundational elements, but they don't have anybody with a lot of artistic know-how.  So Janos asked me if I would be willing to try it out.  I had free time this afternoon, so I went to visit him and his wife Anja (turns out they don't host the church at their house--they live further north, nearer the edge of the city).  Their friend Elaine, who was at church on Sunday, was there too.  Janos and I talked about what they need for the design, and after that we all had coffee together (only I drank tea because I'm not a coffee person).  It was really cool.  I'm super excited to have a project to work on--it will keep me occupied for the next week or two until school really gets going!

Elaine lives near me, so she took the train back with me as far as Barmbek.  We shared stories about our past experiences and what brought us to Hamburg.  She has lived in Australia, the U.K., and the U.S. as well as Germany.  She said she liked living in each place for different reasons, and that each place feels like home to her in different ways.  I can see what she meant--Hamburg already feels kind of like a home away from home.  Maybe that's because it is like L.A. in a lot of ways.

The biggest accomplishment of the day: Laundry!  I prayed beforehand that I wouldn't ruin my clothes.   And PRAISE THE LORD!  They came out smelling clean, feeling dry, and still the correct color when I was done.  Another hurdle cleared!  (Hey, all of you who are at home saying "Oh come on, it's not that hard," you try figuring out what all those words on the washing machine mean that are in a language you don't know!  I had to Google it . . .)
