Today I woke up at 9:30 and set about making French toast with the leftover bread I bought in Kraków. Took longer than I thought . . . it was 11 by the time I finished eating breakfast. Make that brunch.
At 1:30 I left for Janos and Anja's house, where they were having the Good Friday service for City Light. Today was a public holiday and there were only a few trains running, so it took a while for me to get there. It got really cold again today--so cold that it started hailing while I was walking from the station to their house! I was freezing because I didn't wear enough layers of clothes!
The service was good--Joey let me play a couple of worship songs, and he played a couple also. We read through the Good Friday story out of Matthew and then did worship and communion. It was good, but I was really tired and I had a hard time focusing . . .
When I got home, it was almost 6 and I was supposed to meet my Finnish friend Ninni at 7. I took a half-hour power nap and then dragged myself back to the train station.
Ninni met me at the Schlump station, on the west side of downtown. We were planning to go to Hamburger Dom, the spring fair, because it's only open for a couple more days, but it was closed today because of the holiday! So we ended up going for a short walk. We were near the Reeperbahn and neither of us had been there yet. The Reeperbahn is basically like Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood but worse. It is the party strip with the nightclubs, red-light district, bars, etc. It was still light out and we were together, so it wasn't too sketchy yet, but after we walked 2 or 3 blocks we decided we'd seen it and turned around to go back.
We had dinner at a restaurant Indra recommended called Variable, which has affordable prices and a broad menu with good food. I liked it there a lot--it kind of had a pub decor, and tonight it was really mellow. Ninni had a tomato mozzarella salad and I had a Mediterranean salad with some really good bread. We had a nice time together--it was a mellow evening, which suits both our personalities!
Here's some Good Friday music for you:
"Tetelestai" by Paul Clark (this one is SO GOOD!)
"Garden" by Needtobreathe
"Good Friday" by Josh Garrels
. . . and, the CLASSIC:
"Liquid" by Jars of Clay
